There are many different ways you can get involved in racehorse ownership.
Due to the evolution of the syndicate owning a racehorse or a share in one, does not have to be expensive.
The ownership option most suitable for you will largely depend on the amount you wish to spend and the amount of involvment you would like.
The different types of ownership formats are as follows;
This is a form of ownership where you are the sole owner of your horse and no one else. As such, you can decide on the name of your horse and which colours will be worn in your name. You are responsible for all costs and prize money.
Co-ownership of a racehorse involves more than one owner. There are four
different forms of co-ownership:
1. Company Ownership
This is where a company owns a horse rather than an individual. This can be a great way to advertise your company / brand to racegoers of which there were 3,684,295 in 2009 alone. You can name the horse after your company thus ensuring your company name reaches a larger audience again via newspapers and television.
2. Joint Ownership
This form of ownership can consist of between 2 to 12 individuals. The horse or horses can run in either a joint ownership's name or the name of a joint owner.
3. Racing Partnership
Partnerships can consist of between 2 to 20 individuals of who 2 must become, or already be, registered owners.
Both options 2 and 3 can prove very cost effective ways to get involved in ownership. A racing partnership is a great way for an owner to diversify shares amongst several horses without the associated costs of sole ownership attached to each one.
4. Leasing
This option provides entry into ownership without the requirement of outlay. It can be setup for a certain period of time. This option
can work very well with fillies as studs will often look to lease their offspring during their racing career prior to breeding from them.
Racing Clubs are not an independent form of co-ownership. Therefore by joining or becoming a member of a Racing Club you receive the benefits of that Club but are not entering into racehorse ownership yourself. They can be a great starting point for anyone looking at testing the water before getting involved at ownership directly.
